 The Australian Centre for Maritime Studies Inc.

Our Role

The role of the AAMA is essentially to generate greater public awareness of maritime affairs. It is not oriented to single industries or interests but provides a focal point for all those with an interest in maritime affairs, especially those people in business, tertiary institutions, the marine professions and the public service who are concerned with any aspect of Australia's maritime affairs.

Specifically it undertakes to:

  • disseminate information at all levels within the community in order to increase understanding of maritime affairs;
  • develop the educational and intellectual framework necessary to provide a national perspective of maritime affairs.
  • promote and facilitate existing research into maritime affairs and, as appropriate, undertake research or consultancy work in marine fields either within Australia or overseas;
  • complement existing research and development by promoting contact between disciplines that impinge upon maritime affairs and between relevant industry, government, academic and private agencies concerned with maritime affairs;
  • provide a point of contact for discussions, talks and information exchange and visits with relevant bodies whether local or overseas, concerned with maritime affairs;
  • establish an information centre and specialist library facilities in the area of maritime affairs.
